Through Each Others Eyes Photographers Help Phoenix Disadvantaged Youth.

Designed and coordinated by Through Each Others Eyes™ photographer Karen Shell, seven TEOE photographers worked with 19 students at the Children First Academy to create the Kids in Focus exhibit currently on display at the Burton Barr Central Library in Phoenix.

A large crowd attended the March 7 opening night reception, including many of the 19 students and their families. The 38 prints are currently on display in the Teen Central section of the library, and the show will later move to the school where it will remain on permanent display following a special family night.

Seven photographers mentored the 19 children from January 11 – February 8, 2013. Each Friday, all 19 students were sent home with one 27-exposure disposable film camera to document “their world.” After returning their cameras and having the film processed, the students met with their mentors for an evaluation on what was accomplished and ideas on new things to try. Each student took home four cameras and worked with the photographers for five weeks.

Tempe Camera Photo Imaging Center (www.tempecamera.biz) donated the film processing, proof prints, contact sheets, and scans. Claude Briggs, a private donor, purchased the 80 disposable cameras.

The 38 exhibit prints were produced by the McKenna Pro lab (www.mckenapro.com), which has supported Through Each Others Eyes for more than 15 years. Since 1998, the photographers of Through Each Others Eyes have donated their time to take individual and group pictures for the students of Children First Academy (formerly Pappas Schools), which McKenna Pro has printed and distributed to the students free of charge.

John P. Schaefer, Ph.d, President Emeritus of the University of Arizona and co-founder with Ansel Adams of the Center for Creative Photography, accepted the John R. Norton III Vision Award at Exposure 2013 Feb. 22, sponsored by the non-profit organization Through Each Others Eyes™. The crowd of more than 300 at the Phoenix Art Museum applauded when Norman McClelland, CEO of the event’s presenting sponsor, Shamrock Foods, presented the award to Dr. Schaefer.

The John R. Norton III Vision Award is presented each year to a member of the Arizona photo community for a lifetime of achievement, and Dr. Schaefer was honored for establishing the center, for his photographic work, and for his many contributions to the field of astronomy. Two video interviews with Dr. Schaefer can be viewed at the Through Each Others Eyes™ website (www.teoe.org), and more video interviews will appear shortly.

The vision award is given in honor of Through Each Others Eyes™ charter board member John R. Norton III for his vision in photography, in business, and in community service. The Doris and John Norton Gallery at the Phoenix Art Museum is one of John’s major contributions to photography in Arizona.

Through Each Others Eyes™, which celebrated its 25th birthday the night of Exposure 2013, is dedicated to helping people understanding and appreciate cultures different from their own. Composed of 20 Valley photographers who coordinate activities with photographers in 10 countries around the world, TEOE has sponsored more than 100 international exhibitions—which have been viewed by more than two million people. In addition TEOE photographers sponsor education projects, help at risk and homeless kids, and help people around the world celebrate who they are.

Exposure 2013 is the second fundraiser sponsored by Through Each Others Eyes™, and it contained food, music, entertainment by the Sahnas Brothers, a silent auction of the photographs of TEOE members, and a live auction of photo experiences where people could travel and photograph with a TEOE member. Money from the fundraiser will be used to further the educational and community service mission of the organization.

Dr. John P. Schaefer, President Emeritus of the University of Arizona, taught chemistry on the university level before becoming a university president in 1971. That chemistry background was one thing among many that led him into photography, and he has published books of photographs on Tucson’s Mission San Xavier del Bac and the native people of both Mexico and Arizona. His most recent book, A Desert Illuminated:

Cactus Flowers of the Sonoran Desert (2008) was a departure from Dr. Schaefer previous work, which had principally been in black and white.

Dr. Schaefer talks about photography and his first serious effort in the field—photographing Mission San Xavier—a project that he was encouraged to undertake by photographer Ansel Adams. He also talks about his projects in general, and how he started photographing cactus for his most recent publication.

Dr. John P. Schaefer, President Emeritus of the University of Arizona, is the co-founder, with photographer Ansel Adams, of the Center for Creative Photography on the University of Arizona campus. During his 11 years as president of the university, Dr. Schaefer worked tirelessly to elevate the status of photography in the university curriculum, and the center established is like no other in the world: it stores not only the famous pictures of famous photographers, but also their negatives, test prints, journals—all aspects of the creative process.

On February 22, 2013, Dr. Schaefer was presented the John R. Norton III Vision award by Through Each Others Eyes™ for a lifetime of achievement in photography. In this video he talks about his life, his work in photography, and the establishment of the Center for Creative Photography.

When Art Holeman, chair of the Associate Photographers of Through Each Others Eyes™ visited his daughter, working with the Peace Corps in The Gambia, he became aware of the need to improve the local market in Berending Village where his daughter was stationed. The local market was the only place in the village where the women could gather to sell their home-grown vegetables, but during the past rainy season the wooden roof supports rotted and fell, collapsing the roof. Because the market had many uses, its repair and improvement was important to the entire village.

Art knew this was a project where the photographers of Through Each Others Eyes™ could help. Art asked for help, and money was raised through the organization to repair the market place—including new supports and a knew roof. An interview with Erica, taken during a party celebrating her return, and pictures from Art and Erica demonstrate the world impact of Through Each Others Eyes™.

Schaefer, winner of the Through Each Others Eyes™ Exposure 2013 Vision Award; Becky Senf, curator of the Norton Gallery at the Phoenix Art Museum; and John R. Norton III, photographer and philanthropist.

Through Each Others EyesTM held a reception in Tucson November 16 for Dr. John P. Schaefer, winner of the John R. Norton Vision Award for the annual Through Each Others EyesTM fundraiser, Exposure 2013.

! Held at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum, the reception included friends and associates of Dr. Schaefer, the University of Arizona’s “President Emeritus “and the co- founder with Ansel Adams of the U or A Center for Creative Photography. Among those in attendance was John R. Norton, board member of TEOE, and Norman McClelland, CEO of Shamrock Foods, which is the presenting sponsor of Exposure 2013.

! Introducing Dr. Schaefer at the reception was Becky Senf, curator of the Norton Gallery at the Phoenix Art Museum. Becky outlined Dr. Schaefer’s many accomplishments which contributed to his lifetime of achievement: founding the Center for Creative Photography on the U of A campus, serving as President of the Research Corporation for Science Advancement (which developed the Large Binocular Telescope —the largest telescope in the world), chairing the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope Corporation, and, as an accomplished photographer, documenting the people and the landscape of Arizona and Mexico in many publications.

! Becky served as chair of the selection committee which chose Dr. Schaefer for this honor, and the award will be given during Exposure 2013 February 22, 2013, at the Phoenix Art Museum.

! In Dr. Schaefer’s brief remarks, he joked that for the first time since coming to Arizona 50 years ago he actually wished he lived in Phoenix—where he could then be a part of an organization as wonderful as Through Each Others EyesTM! He thanked TEOE President Errol Zimmerman and other board members present for giving him this honor, and he thanked his many friends present at the event.

! Dr. Schaefer noted that people today document their lives through photography. Rather than through a collection of diaries and journals, family histories are now contained in photo albums. Because of the importance of photography in our history and culture, Dr. Schaefer believed that universities should be collecting photography and enlarging upon our knowledge of this field.

! The Through Each Others Eyes John R Norton III Vision Award is given annually to a recipient who has demonstrated a lifetime of vision. It is named for businessman, photographer, and philanthropist John R. Norton III, who is a charter board member of Through Each Others EyesTM.
