EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
Pappas School
For over seven years, TEOE volunteer photographers have photographed students at the Thomas J. Pappas School in Phoenix, Arizona, a school providing basic education to homeless children. Free school portrait packages have been provided to over 3,500 children and their parents, and in many cases these are the first photographs ever taken of these children. When Pappas School opened a Tempe campus in 2002, TEOE photographers provided portrait packages for the 85 students in that school as well. The Pappas School photo project has been made possible not only by TEOE volunteers, but by donation of film from Fuji and by the donation of processing and printing by Visual Color, a division of McKenna Photo Lab.
On April 12, 2006, TEOE, with the help of Great Clips, took pictures of more than 900 children at the Pappas School in Phoenix. Six TEOE associates plus two additional photographers donated their time. TEOE Board members and the teachers at Pappas were quite helpful in arranging the kids and getting them to smile. Judy Mariahazy at Central High also released three of her advanced photo students to assist, and their help was greatly appreciated!
Virtual Exchanges
In January, 1999, TEOE sponsored the first virtual exchange, The Japan Digital Project, which was the result of close cooperation between TEOE and the Eastman Kodak Company. The project included students at Kotogaoka High School in Himeji, Japan and Central High School in Phoenix, Arizona. Using digital cameras, the students captured images of themselves and their cultures to share with each other each day for ten days. Each day, images from each school were simultaneously uploaded to the Kodak web site, where they were viewed by thousands of high school students around the world.
