ABOUT Through Each Others Eyes™
MISSION

"We explore the world through photography, promoting understanding and respect for all cultures, and enriching lives by seeing more clearly through each other’s eyes."

Since its beginning in 1988 as a one-time photographic exchange between Phoenix and its sister city of Himeji, TEOE has carried its message of cultural understanding and appreciation beyond the Valley to the citizens of six countries. Photographers in Phoenix have linked with photographers in Japan, China, Mexico, Cuba, Scotland, and Ireland to document people and their patterns of living, and to capture the essential elements of a culture from their perspective as foreigners.

To date there have been more than 50 exhibitions from TEOE exchanges, and more than a million people have viewed the imagery of TEOE photographers. The experience of a TEOE exhibition is to see ourselves as others see us, and to learn more about who we are from photographic documents of foreign photographers.

The photographers of Through Each Others Eyes™ do much more than photograph and exhibit, as evidenced by the many educational and service projects of photographers in Phoenix and abroad. TEOE photographers work with teachers and students to help young people use the camera to document culture, and to help help build a society of tolerance with photography as the bridge to understanding.

Their work includes assisting teachers in the classroom, but also in helping young people in great need. In Phoenix, for the past five years TEOE photographers have taken pictures of the students at the Thomas J. Pappas schools for homeless children and have provided, free of charge, a package of portraits for these children and their families.
